If you have missing teeth because of gum disease, extensive decay, or trauma, affordable dental implants could help you enjoy smiling again. Implants look and feel just like natural teeth. They can allow you to enjoy foods you’ve been avoiding. An implant can replace a single tooth, or one or more can be used as a support for dentures. Your dentist can perform tests to determine if you are good candidate for dental implants. You’ll need to have enough healthy jawbone and gum tissue to support them.

The Process for Placing Implant Dentures
First, if the implant will replace a diseased tooth that is still in your mouth, your dentist, oral surgeon, or periodontist will remove it. Next, an anchor or small titanium screw and a post will be placed into your jawbone as a support for the crown or visible part of the implant. The post, or abutment, extends out of the screw. Some dentists place the post in a separate procedure. Before the new crown can be added, your jawbone must grow and fuse to the anchor; this usually takes three to six months. When it is firmly attached, your dentist will cement the crown in place.

It’s normal to experience some swelling and tenderness after dental implant surgery. Your dentist will provide pain medicine if needed. You may need to eat only soft foods for a short period of time after the procedure. The best dental implants can last for decades, but just as with natural teeth, you must pay close attention to oral hygiene to keep them healthy. Unlike dentures, implants stay in your mouth.
